Rubber Stamps have an interesting history for those who don’t know that they might have been inspired by dentures. Yes, it’s true: dental dentures! But first, some background, as Charles Goodyear had to discover the secret of vulcanization. This is the process of “curing” rubber so it can be molded as needed. Before Mr. Goodyear’s invention of the vulcanization process, rubber — in its natural state — was practically impossible to work with.It is sticky and would not stay set in any particular shape. But with vulcanization, rubber, once cooled, would stay in the same the shape as its mold.

But poor Mr. Goodyear did not benefit financially from his invention, though he was publicly honored by the Emperor of France, Napoleon himself, and recognized with many prestigious decorations. His invention, however, went on to find many applications that would change the world. One of these was dentures. Rubber was a superior material for dentures, which in those days were often made of metal or even wood.Dentists had long been making their own dentures, and one of these many dentists had a curious nephew that realized the potential of rubber and eventually wound up manufacturing rubber stamps for the U.S. Postal Service. This nephew was a certain Mr. James Woodruff, is often credited with having invented the quality rubber stamp we know today. But there are, actually, many different accounts for the invention of rubber stamps, depending on exactly how a rubber stamp is defined, with one even stretching all the way back to the ancient Mayans! This version just presented is among the most widely accepted accounts for the rubber devices which we today would most immediately recognize as being a rubber stamp.

Another very popular and generally acknowledged account of the invention the rubber stamp involves a Mr. L.F. Witherell, who went so far as to compose a document titled “How I Came to Discover the Rubber Stamp,” in which he claimed to have been inspired during work as a foreman at a wooden pump manufacturing facility. According to Mr. Witherell, a problem developed one day with the paint that was used to mark the pumps. The paint would run and hide necessary information underneath blotches. Mr. Witherell came upon the notion of making stencils out of the thin sheets of rubber packing laying around. But while making the stencil, he thought further and decided to simply create thick letters out of the rubber, then glue them to a backing of wood, with which he could make many impressions of the necessary marks.

The one account held least likely concerns a Mr. Henry C. Leland, who was actually championed at the time by none other than the “Stamp Trade News,” published by a manufacturer of rubber stamps. But whatever its origins, there is no doubt that the rubber stamp itself has left quite an impression on our lives.

The simple acts of drawing and coloring are literally childs' play, however, both of these past-times play an important role in your child's physical, emotional and cognitive development. Like no other activity, the hobby of drawing and coloring allows young children to express themselves and their emotions, experience autonomy and build their confidence.

Parents and caregivers such as teachers and grandparents can promote the hobby of drawing and coloring as a way to improve physical, social, emotional and cognitive development-and to have a lot of fun along the way too. Here are some suggestions:

1. Provide your grankids with nontoxic materials, blank sheets of white paper and coloring pages.

2. Model drawing. Show children that you like to draw and color too – make designs but do not show your children what they should draw.

3. Encourage all drawing and coloring efforts by talking about the beautiful colors, the lines and shapes the child has made.

4. Rather than ask "What is it?,” say “Tell me everything about your drawing”.Asking “What is that?” suggests to the child that he may have failed to draw the image correctly.

5. Talk about issues such as thin or thick, or the concept of wide, narrow, dark, light, edge, shape, contour, etc.

6.Display their art in a prominent place – such as the kitchen fridge, and in places where visitors to your home will see them. Point them out to visitors – the praise for the work will boost a child’s self esteeem and confidence.

7.Give kids the freedom to choose the subjects of their drawings and the types of coloring sheets they would like. Some argue that coloring sheets do very little to foster children's creativity - however they do play a vital role in developing a child's fine motor skills - a pre-cursor to writing - and often encourage children who wouldn't otherwise draw and color to pick up a crayon to color in their favourite character. For example little girls may enjoy coloring images of fairytale princesses while boys enjoy coloring images of favourite characters such as Pokemon or Spongebob Squarepants and at sites like Spongebob Coloring Pages you’ll find many Spongebob colouring pictures Always supervise younger children while they draw and color – crayons pose a choking hazard.

Building model railways is a hobby enjoyed by people of all ages. Both parents and children can get a lot out of building and operating model rail systems.

The Hornby name has been synonymous with top quality model railway systems since 1920 when Frank Hornby introduced his first, clockwork train. This early model was powered with a clockwork, wind up motor. Hornby soon introduced an electric model that required a mains supply of 100 to 250 volts. Hornby subsequently developed a far safer system that used a potential of only 6 volts.

There are many, varied Hornby train sets, from beginner level through to enthusiast. Interacting with your children is enormously beneficial for them and a model train system can provide the basis for that interaction. It provides a basis for communication, cooperation and can be immensely educational. Its also a fantastic way for parents to engage and bond with their children.

Once built a model railway provides a fantastic stimulus for creative play. Children can use their imaginations to make up stories about the trains and people around the track. A few accessories like buildings and model people can really bring the railway system alive.

Play is well known to be essential in a childs development. Parents playing with their children is particularly beneficial. Playing with your children is one of the best ways to learn about them. You will find out what interests them, where they have particular skills and what concerns them. Encouraging your child to make up stories that involve their model railway system is a great way to stimulate their creativity. It’s also an excellent way to see how your child is developing.

I recall the fun I had building a model rail system with my father. He clearly enjoyed the process of setting up the track and getting the system working and his enthusiasm was infectious. He and I would make up elaborate stories involving the people around the track, the stations and the trains.

So if you are looking for a way to interact with your young children I suggest that you consider a little train set.
