Knitters become more particular about their materials as their skill level increases. In particular, knitters begin to notice subtle differences in needles that can make a big difference in the quality and ease of creating their finished products. Addi knitting needles are designed by and for such discriminating knitters.

Addi knitting needles are made in Germany and are popular throughout the United States and Europe with knitters for the speed and ease of knitting made possible by these needles. They are distributed exclusively in North America by Skacel and are available in fine knitting stores across the country.

Addi needles are available in many different styles and materials. One of their most popular products is their circular needle. This was the initial product in this popular line. The needles have rust-resistant nickel-plated brass tips, and the cord is snag-free nylon. The needles are lightweight and make significantly less noise than most needles, so you can feel comfortable knitting at the movies or in any other situation where the noise could be distracting. These needles come in a number of lengths and sizes; they are available in 12, 16, 20, 24, 32, 40, 47, and 60 inch lengths, and in sizes 0 to 36 US.

Addi also offers circular lace needles. The needles are longer and slightly more pointed than the regular circular needles; they also have a special, more pliable cord perfect for lace knitting. They are available in 16, 24, 32, 40, 47, and 60 inch lengths, and in sizes 1 to 9 US.

In addition to metal circular needles, Addi offers bamboo circular needles. They are available in similar sizes to the Addi metal circular needles.

While the Addi circular needles are very popular, their straight needles are also widely used. They offer turbo, bamboo, aluminum, and plastic straight needles. The straight needles are available in a variety of lengths and sizes. Addi double-pointed needles come in steel, aluminum, plastic, and bamboo.

Addi truly offers the range of types, lengths, and sizes of knitting needles that knitters need to use. Their variety of materials and thoughtful design make them one of the most popular and easy-to-use needles available.

I needed to set out some basic knitting instructions as a reminder so here it is.

All knitting instructions use fundamentally 2 stitches, the knit stitch and the purl stitch. When you know these 2 knitting necessities you’ll be able to follow most knitting instructions which are just mixtures or variations of these two stitches. Knitting Instructions for the Knit Stitch when you have cast on, hold the knitting needle with the cast on stitches in your left hand. Loop the knitting yarn round the right knitting needle from back to front, letting the knitting yarn rest between the needles.

Catch the knitting yarn on the end on the right knitting needle and pull it thru the 1st stitch to the front of the work. Slip the old stitch off the left needle. The new stitch is now on the right needle. Now you are getting the hang of the knitting instructions. It’s a brilliant idea to keep the knitting yarn thrown over the right forefinger, this keeps it to the back of the work too. Repeat this process till all stitches are on the right knitting needle. This is the 1st row from your knitting instructions. The knitting yarn will look like it is at the front and you will now take it to the back and start the second row of transferring stitches to the empty right needle. Commence with the knitting needle with the cast on stitches in your left hand.

Your knitting yarn will be hanging in front. Push point of right knitting needle into the front of the first stitch from right to left. Wrap the knitting yarn around the top of the right knitting needle, crossing over the two needles and hanging once more in front. Slide the right knitting needle down and back taking the new loop of knitting yarn from front to back, thru the old stitch. Slip the old stitch off the left knitting needle. If you have followed the knitting instructions you presently have a stitch in purl on the right knitting needle and the yarn is hanging, once more, in the front. Repeat this process till all stitches are on the right knitting needle.

Now count the stitches to make certain you have not dropped any and turn the work around putting the knitting needle with the stitches on in your left hand to start the subsequent row. I’m hoping you might follow these basic knitting instructions.

When choosing the best knitting needles, start with the knitting project’s requirements. The pattern will indicate a preferred needle size, as well as the number of stiches in the gauge swatch. Depending on how tightly you work your stiches, you may find that you will need needles either slightly larger or slightly smaller than the size called for on the pattern. When you are buying your first knitting needles, you would do better to go to a specialty store (such as Knitch Knitting) that features a large knitting department, or to a knitting shop. The staff are generally quite knowledgeable and are very willing to help you choose the best knitting needles. Don’t forget to take your pattern with you.

Size

Standard knitting needle sizes in the United States generally run from 000 (the smallest) to 50 (the largest). However, it is also common to see the diameter measured in millimeters (MM). Please be aware that U.K./Canadian sizing is very different. For example, 000 in UK/Canadian Sizing is equal to 10 in U.S. sizing, but they both have a diamter of 10MM. You need to be aware of the sizing standard used by the pattern. Many knitting needle companies will indicate the standard (US or UK) as well as the MM diameter. If you are in doubt, please ask for help at the knitting counter.

Style

For most beginning knitters, the best knitting needle style is the straight needle. These are easily recognized by the capped end which helps to stop the stiches from falling off the end of the needle. The specialty needles are used for more intricate and advanced knitting patterns.

Material

The most popular materials used to make knitting needles are plastic, metal, wood and bamboo. Not only do each of these materials will feel different in your hands, but they will also interact differently with the thread you have choosen for your project. Plastic and metal needles are very smooth and cool to the touch, but they allow the thread to glide so easily that many beginning knitters can have some difficulty using them. Wood and bamboo needles are warm to the touch, a bit more flexible, and have enough friction to help a beginning knitter to manage the stitches better, but they break more easily than metal or plastic. You may want to try them out to help you choose which are the best knitting needles for you.

We live in a society that moves at a relentless pace, wanting instant gratification & hardly ever stopping to take stock of what is really important in life. In this environment, many people are searching for something creative & rewarding to occupy themselves. Hundreds of thousands of people are finding that creative outlet in knitting. So why should you take up knitting?

Firstly, as mentioned above, it is a creative outlet. There is nothing like the feeling of achievement of taking yarn & 2 needles (or 4!) & creating a pair of socks or a jumper or a toy for your favorite small person. Knitting involves only 2 stitches that are repeated in varying ways to produce absolutely endless possibilities for your creativity.

Secondly, knitting is relaxing. After a long day at work, coming home and sitting down to knit a few rows enables you to relax (unless you’re knitting a really complicated pattern & getting it wrong – then knitting can be stressful!). Have a few projects on the go at all times so you have ‘relaxing’ knitting & ‘complicated’ knitting & can knit the appropriate project depending on your mood.

Thirdly, knitting exercises your brain. ‘Complicated’ knitting involving intricate lace work, or a pattern that has 54 rows to every pattern repeat can really stretch your thinking processes. Not to mention having to calculate how to pick up stitches or increase/decrease stitches evenly.

Finally, you should take up knitting because you might love it! Many a dedicated knitter was initially a knit-skeptic, thinking knitting was for grannies, but once taught how to use those needles found they loved it because it’s creative & relaxing & exercises your brain & a host of other reasons. Some knit-a-holics tried knitting once, many years ago & failed but on trying again fell in love & haven’t looked back.

So, for the reasons mentioned above, give knitting a go & you might surprise yourself with what you can achieve.

Andrea Katz has been knitting for 28 years & is a self confessed knit addict. She knits any & everything & sometimes designs her own patterns.
